Welcome to the
exeter city centre chaplaincy

  • We are an ecumenical group of folk who have trained to act as Chaplains to the people who work in shops in the centre of Exeter.

  • The briefest description of our role is to 'be a listening ear'. We are available to anyone regardless of their faith position: we wish to show the love of God to all who work in the City Centre Stores.

What do Chaplains do?
The Exeter City Centre Chaplaincy seeks to serve all who work in the shops in Exeter City Centre by offering a listening ear. Chaplains aim to visit any given shop at least once a month (more often in larger stores) so as to get to know the staff and become trusted by them.

A Chaplain may be allocated a number of shops in a defined area, or concentrate on one large store. Relationships are also established with people who work in and around  the shopping centres including: the cleaners and security staff.

In Princesshay and the Guildhall Centre, Chaplains may be able to make contact with those who run stalls for just one day, or one week, as well as the more permanent shops.

In small shops (such as those in Fore St) there may be only one or two staff. A visit to such places once a month is sufficient to get to know these folk. One chaplain can serve 30 - 40 such shops.
